Vibrate and ClubJersey are bringing the Jersey Club scene to the UK - with a London Twist

Even if you don’t know about Jersey Club music, if you’ve heard anything by Ice Spice, Coi Leray, Drake, PinkPantheress, Russ Millions or Lil Uzi Vert recently, you’ll have been influenced by it.

Originating from Baltimore Club in Newark in the early 00s, Jersey Club is fuelled by dance culture, community and edits, which is why it’s gone viral on TikTok. Deriving itself from House, Jersey Club blends choppy, bouncy breaks with those sexy old and new school R&B, hip hop and pop samples we all love to move and sing along to.

One thing that’s special about the scene is that it’s got strong female representation in its innovators and audience. In an interview with Vice on why Jersey Club is more popular with women than men’, CLUBJERSEY (the first Jersey Club platform) founder Arghtee shared the revealing stats from his now 400K subscriber YouTube channel.

"One of the reasons Jersey Club parties are usually popping is because most of the listeners are female. Fuck all these Grime/Techno/House parties full of mandem, if you want some girls in your party you need to play some Jersey Club”.

- Arghtee (CLUBJERSEY founder)

Jersey Club doesn’t just appeal to a female audience. While DJ Tameil, Tim Dolla and Mike V are the forefathers, the scene has always been innovated by women producers, vocalists and dancers, with artists like Ice Spice, Kia BHN, Cookie Kawaii and UNIIQU3 at the forefront of the scene.

UNIIQU3 told The Gumbo’s article celebrating the many women Jersey Club that she “set a new vibe” during her sets and created a space for women to reclaim their bodies and autonomy on the dance floor. “I would call the girls into the circle! I was over the misogyny. Tired of the girls being told to booty bounce for the enjoyment of the guys.”

That’s why this May 13th couldn’t have come at a more perfect moment.

This May 13th, CLUBJERSEY is teaming up with VIBRATE, a queer party centering QTIBIPOC that has been championing genres like Jersey Club the past 5 years. They’re flying over the legendary DJ 809 from Jersey to Bar A Bar in East London to headline, and the whole thing will be filmed Boiler Room-style!

"I'm originally from the DMV in the US and grew up listening to Baltimore club and jersey club music. I started DJing when I was 12 years old and remember always trying to find the jersey club remixes I would hear on the radio for my sets. To now be based in London helping throw this collab event between VIBRATE & CLUBJERSEY, 2 long-time jersey club tastemakers in Europe, is a truly surreal, full-circle moment; especially now seeing jersey club finally start to get the shine it deserves in the mainstream. Plus, to be flying out one of the sickest jersey club producers to perform is the cherry on top!"
